I was born and grew up in Northern Ireland in the 1970s to 1990s, before eventually leaving home and the ‘Northern Ireland Troubles’ behind to study Illustration & Printmaking in Dundee, Scotland. After a few years of meandering, I landed in Bristol UK where I initially tried the route of self-employed artist & art workshop tutor. And whilst this served me for a time, I always felt something was missing. It was only after a very significant, personal, life-changing event that I really started to harness that “something” and ask deeper questions. In other words, I started to turn inwards, rather than looking outside of myself and literally trying to produce what I believed would “sell” or be “acceptable”, trying to mould myself into a shape I believed others wanted to see. Life was giving me a chance to be more authentic and true to who I really am.
But this journey took time (and is still unfolding). I began my inner work journey in a very private way through online courses in my mid 30s before I felt ready and courageous enough to work with a therapist, and indeed different therapists along the varying stages of my growth. And in the midst of it, I took the plunge of training to become a Person-Centred talk therapist myself, which felt like an enormous leap.
Since graduating with my Level 4 Diploma in 1999, I’ve become increasingly interested in body-focused work and energy healing, coming to believe so passionately in turning towards my own body wisdom to help me navigate my way towards deeper truth.
No doubt, starting a journey into therapy and inner work can feel like coming out of hiding. That’s exactly how I felt, and it can at times feel scary. But with the right support every slow step of the way, it can bring you ever closer to a more real and honest “you”.
